It is now time for anyone and everyone interested in having a decent track at Hanes Park to step up and be heard. The Hanes Park track is the only public (open to everyone most of the time) facility in the county for track running. It's very heavily used by walkers and runners from all over the community. It needs significant work for drainage improvement and resurfacing to be restored as a quality track. This needs to go into the Parks and Open Space Plan as a priority capital needs improvement.

Having those and similar comments from a lot of people in the record during these hearings will make it politically possible to argue for inclusion of that item in capital project budget plans over the next year. Heretofore, other projects have gotten all the public attention. The cost of the renovation puts it out of range of anything the Rec & Parks Dept can do through operating budget expenditures.

The following was taken from City Council Member Dan Besse's monthly SouthWest Ward update:

"Parks and Open Space Plan public meetings: Public comment meetings are taking place now on the draft city/county Parks and Open Space Plan. The plan discusses priority needs and recommendations for improving our local parks and recreational resources over the next 10 years. Please let us hear your thoughts on these important community resources. The draft plan can be reviewed online at www.cityofws.org/recreation. The public comment meetings most convenient to Southwest Ward residents will be held Wednesday, October 19, 6:30 p.m., Miller Park Recreation Center, at 400 Leisure Lane; and Thursday, October 20, 6:30 p.m., South Fork Recreation Center, at 4403 Country Club Road."

This will be our only chance for a very long time to get funding for this project. I suggest that the TCTC come up with a plan for speaking up at this meeting.

I urge everyone to attend this meeting. Strong public support will help help get this passed. In addition to the tracks public use Reynolds High School uses it as well as The Next Level Track Club. The community needs this facility to be in good condition. We need it to ensure a future for running sports in Winston-Salem.

Here is a link to the flier with all the dates and times of public comment meetings.

Additionally, I will be posting fliers around the Hanes Park area to encourage those who use the track to speak up and try to get the needed improvements.

If anyone wants to contact me about this, feel free at thomasabuford at yahoo.com.

Check out the video of "Athlete of the Week" (Trey Miller) on WXII's website. This was broadcast on WXII telvision. This shows the poor
condition of the track with the pavement missing and standing water.
