Hey guys and gals,
I’m trying to get back into running and until I get my stamina back for the long runs, I love the quick turns and the up and down nature of running through the woods.
I’ve been looking around town, but the only places I’ve been able to find for good local trails are at Horizons Park and the Piedmont environmental Center in Highpoint. I’ve tried Salem lake, but it’s a bit too flat and long.

Has anyone found any good trails through the Winston woods? I’ve thought about trying some of the mountain bike trails in Tanglewood or Hobby Park, but there might not be enough room on the trails for the wheelers and runners?

Any thoughts would be great! Thanks - Jon

There are several areas for a little off road running in Winston Salem. Reynolda Garden nature trail behind Reynolda Village has over a mile of uphill running. The trail head begins by the remains of the boat house on what used to be Lake Katherine. There are a few short loops that can be added to this, but they get over grown in the summer. From the top of the trail near the gate of the entrance to Reynolda House run back down the road to return to the trail head for 1.5 miles total.
From there take the paved path to Wake Forest University. Run about a mile through the campus to the XC course near the hammer throw area behind the track. Take the outer loop of the XC course for an additional 1.5 miles. Switch backs off the main loop can add another .5 to 1 mile of distance. Return to Reynolda village and you have a 5 to 6 mile run depending on swith backs and added loops.

Hanes park has decent off road running trails that can be made into 1 to 1.5 mile loops. Although not clearly marked with a little exploring you can easily devise a few loops.

There is a flat par course off of Silas Creek parkway at Shaffner park, and many single track trails off the main trail of Salem Lake.

If you have time on a weekend I suggest a little drive into Greensboro, NC to Bur-Mill Park. Without sounding confusing, go to the information center and look at or pick up a map. There a flatter trails and more changling trails. If a person wanted to the mountain to sea trails can allow a person to run close to 25-26 miles without ever running over the same path twice. Of course I have not ever done such an insane thing. However, Owl's Roost is a local favorite. On another weekend travel to Blowing Rock. Moss Cone Manor House has 25 miles of trails that are wide and soft. Zap Fitness, an elite developement track club trains there. These are just a few options on a weekend to keep things interesting.
