| Has anyone ran the Rock n Roll half marathon in VA Beach? I have friends that have went and had a great time, but said that lodging was expensive and getting to the course was a nightmare. Anyone have any experiences? I'm trying to get a group together to go. Thanks! |

I ran it the first year. It can be windy. But I liked the race in general.
At a beach on a holiday weekend good deals on rooms can be hard to find. I stayed at the Holiday Inn at the beach and was able to used the run to the start as a warm-up, so I didn't have an issue with getting there. It's less than a mile from the beach-front when I did it, so if you get a beach front hotel near the finish it's easy to get to the start. |

I've run it 3 times, and will probably do it again this year.
Lodging is expensive, basically because if you stay near the beach it is a 3 night minimum. I stayed out a little bit. I didn't find getting to the start to be a problem at all, there is plenty of parking if you are willing to jog 1/2 mile or so to the start.
The course is flat, but as Keith stated, it is windy. I didn't find it particularly fast, I guess due to the wind, but you may get lucky with that.
The post-race ammenities suck, especially for a race that charges so much. But I guess Elite Racing needs to make their cut.
If you manage to snag hardware it's pretty cool. Head of a guitar mounted on a plaque.

I ran the RR Half in 2003 and had a great experience. I stayed in Portsmouth (15 minutes from downtown VA Beach) and so my lodging was much much more reasonable. I didn't have any troubles getting to the race, I took one of the shuttle busses provided (had to be there at 5:30am). I would recommend this race to anyone. It was my first half and it was a lot of fun- great crowd, great music. I made a vacation out of it and plan to do it again this year. FYI it usually sells out by April so if you're going to register you should hurry. Thanks.
